An Introduction to the Power of the Hexagrams

 

The Yijing is more than its written text. Every hexagram has an internal structure of trigrams, lines and relationships that can be studied directly and used as a foundation for interpretation. 

 

In this training, you learn to work with that structure before turning to the traditional texts. We explore the trigrams, moving lines, nuclear trigrams, baoti, trigram circles and sancai — Heaven, Human and Earth — and show how these different layers change the way a hexagram can be understood. 

 

The recorded lessons are taught by Harmen Mesker and draw on his extensive research into the Yijing and the image-and-number tradition. Throughout the training, Johannes Bloemsma supports students with their questions and cases and leads the live Q&A session, helping you apply the material and deepen your interpretation in practice. 

 

The aim is to help you become less dependent on commentary alone and more confident in reading the architecture of the hexagram itself. Whether you are relatively new to the Yijing or have worked with it for many years, this training gives you a deeper framework for understanding how a hexagram is constructed and how its different parts relate to one another.

Hexagrams - The Heart of the Yijing

 

In this training, the focus is on the hexagram itself. For a while, you set the text aside and learn to work directly with its structure: trigrams, lines, movement and pattern. The traditional text remains an essential part of the Yijing, but learning to see the architecture of the hexagram first gives you another foundation from which to read it. This structural approach offers several important advantages:

A clear structural foundation

Instead of beginning with hundreds of individual text passages, you first learn to work with the eight trigrams, six line positions and the relationships between them. This gives you a framework that can be applied to every hexagram.

Read without depending on the text

When you learn to recognise structure directly, you are no longer dependent on a commentary every time you cast a hexagram. The trigrams, lines and patterns themselves already give you information to work with..

See the situation more quickly

The structure of a hexagram can immediately show where movement, tension or relationship is located. This gives you a first orientation before you turn to the traditional text for further depth.

Text and structure deepen each other

Once you understand the architecture of the hexagram, returning to the traditional text becomes a different experience. Images and statements can be read in relation to the structure from which they arise, allowing both approaches to inform one another. 

A return to an older way of working: Reading the structure of the hexagram directly has deep roots in the Chinese Yijing tradition. It is closely connected to xiangshu 象數 - Image and Number, an approach in which trigrams, lines, positions, numbers and patterns are studied as sources of meaning in their own right.

The Yijing Training — 8 Lessons

 

The training is structured in eight lessons, with each lesson building on the previous one.

LESSON 1: Divination & Trigrams -

Foundations of divination, resonance, casting and trigram interpretation

LESSON 2: Moving Lines & Balance – Understanding moving lines, changing trigrams, imbalance and restoration

LESSON 3: Trigram Circles & Houtian Bagua – Working with trigram arrangements, cycles, seasons and direction

LESSON 4: Nuclear Trigrams & Baoti – Exploring nuclear trigrams, baoti and structures hidden within the hexagram

LESSON 5: Lines & Their Meanings - Line structure, line meanings, multiple movers.

LESSON 6: Sancai — Heaven, Human & Earth - Reading the three levels of the hexagram and their relationships

LESSON 7: Integration & Insight Bringing the different structural layers together in a complete reading

LESSON 8: Live Q&A & Casework Questions, student cases and deeper interpretation

 

Each lesson includes video teachings, reading material and practical assignments. You can work with your own questions and cases, use the discussion forum to exchange insights, and receive guidance as you progress through the training. The course material remains available after the final lesson, so you can continue studying and returning to the material in your own time.

Harmen Mesker

Founder Yijing Research Center

Harmen is internationally recognized as one of the foremost Western scholars and teachers of the Yijing. For more than four decades, he has immersed himself in the classical Chinese texts that underpin the Book of Changes, bringing rare depth and precision to his teaching. 

 

Known for his ability to open the original scriptures with clarity and insight, Harmen guides students into the language, structure, and layers of the Yijing that few outside of China have ever studied. His approach combines scholarly rigor with a deep sense of wonder, making ancient wisdom both accurate and alive.

Johannes Bloemsma

 Founder Nourishing Destiny Academy

Johannes Bloemsma is the founder of the Nourishing Destiny Academy and developer of the ND Model™. He works internationally as a teacher and consultant with students, private clients and professional groups. 

 

His work brings together the Yijing, Nine Star Ki and Wenwang Gua, with a particular focus on recognising patterns and understanding how different layers of a situation or life story relate to one another. As a teacher, Johannes is known for making complex systems clear, practical and accessible. 

 

Within The Power of the Hexagrams, Johannes supports students throughout the training, answers questions and works with cases that arise from the lessons. He also leads the live Q&A session, helping students bring Harmen Mesker’s recorded teachings into practical interpretation and deepen their understanding of the hexagrams.
