The Yijing is not merely a book - it is a living system of observation, resonance, and transformation. For more than 2,500 years, it has guided people through moments of uncertainty, transition, and choice. But true understanding rarely comes from the text alone. Its real wisdom opens when you learn to read the hexagram itself. This traineeship offers exactly that doorway. 

 

Created and taught by world-renowned Yijing scholar Harmen Mesker, this program takes you deep into the structural heart of the Yijing: the trigrams, moving lines, nuclear trigrams, baoti, trigram circles, and the sancai - Heaven, Human, Earth. You learn to work directly with these ancient building blocks, exactly as Daoist practitioners have done for more than two thousand years. 

 

Whether you’re new to the Book of Changes or have been consulting it for decades, this traineeship teaches you what most Yijing users never learn: how to make the hexagram itself your guide, even without the book in your hand.

Hexagrams - The Heart of the Yijing

 

In this traineeship, the focus is on the hexagrams themselves and the profound structure hidden within them. You will be invited to set the text aside for a while and work directly with the architecture of change: trigrams, lines, movement, and pattern. The text remains an essential part of the Yijing, but when you first learn to read the hexagram, everything else becomes clearer. Focusing on the hexagram offers several powerful advantages:

A simple, elegant structure

Instead of navigating 450 separate pieces of text, you learn to work with eight trigrams and six lines. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone can learn this.

Freedom from the book

When you learn to read structure instead of relying on text, you can consult the Yijing anywhere. A hexagram can be cast and understood on the spot.

Instant insight

You gain an immediate sense of what the situation needs and how to proceed. And when two people or parties are involved,  

the hexagram reveals exactly how they relate and interact.

Text and structure become one

Once you understand the value of the hexagram, returning to the text becomes easier and more intuitive. The two complement each other like yin and yang.

A return to ancient practice: Working only with the hexagram without resorting to the text of the Book of Changes is a very old practice in China. It is part of the xiangshu 象數 way of Yijing study that is practiced by Daoists.

Your Path in 8 Weeks

 

This traineeship unfolds step by step, with each lesson building on the last:

LESSON 1: Divination & Trigrams -

Chance, resonance, coins, trigrams, meaning, application.

LESSON 2: Moving Lines & Balance – Moving lines, shifting trigrams, imbalance, restoration.

LESSON 3: Trigram Circles & Houtian Bagua – Trigram circles, xiantian/houtian, seasons, cycles, direction.

LESSON 4: Nuclear Trigrams & Baoti – Nuclear trigrams, obstruction, baoti, blocked qualities.

LESSON 5: Lines & Their Meanings - Line structure, line meanings, multiple movers.

LESSON 6: Sancai – Heaven–Human–Earth, line relations, sancai dynamics in both trigrams and hexagrams.

LESSON 7: Integration & Insight Synthesis, essentials, deeper reading.                .

LESSON 8: Practice & Completion Q&A, student cases, closing round.

 

Each weekly lesson consists of reading material and videos, assignments with feedback (often by video), and discussions of cases provided by the students and by the teacher, in which the theory is put to practice. There is a discussion forum, as well as a chat function to converse with your teacher and the other students. And when the course is complete, you keep lifelong access to the entire learning environment and all its resources.
